How to choose your luggage

Cabin, medium, or large. Hard shell or soft canvas. A set or a single case. Use this guide to match trip length and packing style to the luggage we sell.

Fantana Roland cabin suitcase

Choosing luggage starts with three decisions: size, shell type, and whether you want a matching set. Below is how we organise those choices at House of Velorien, using the sizes and materials on our product pages.

Cabin, medium, or large

Our store groups cases by height so you can browse by trip type:

  • [Cabin luggage](/collections/cabin-luggage) for cases tagged up to about 57 cm, such as Richmond at 57 × 37 × 23–25 cm (2.8 kg, polypropylene) or Chelsea at 56 × 40.5 × 22–24.5 cm.
  • [Medium luggage](/collections/medium-luggage) for mid-size trips, such as Richmond at 67 × 46 × 29–31 cm (3.7 kg) or Kensington at 66 × 44 × 28 cm.
  • [Large luggage](/collections/large-luggage) for longer stays, such as Kensington at 76 × 50 × 31 cm or Hampstead at 77 × 32.5 × 54 cm.

Airline cabin rules change by carrier and fare. Always check your airline’s current allowance before you fly. Use our listed external dimensions as your reference, not a promise of acceptance.

Hard shell or soft

Most of our cases are hard shell. Materials you will see on product pages include polypropylene (PP), polycarbonate (PC), ABS, and aluminium.

  • PP and PC cases such as [Kensington](/products/fantana-kensington-55cm), [Chelsea](/products/fantana-chelsea-56cm), and [Marylebone](/products/fantana-marylebone-69-5cm) are built as impact-resistant shells with spinner wheels and telescopic handles.
  • Aluminium options such as [Holland Park 55 cm](/products/fantana-holland-park-55cm) list aircraft-grade aluminium builds with TSA combination locks on the product details.
  • Soft canvas appears on pieces such as [Soho Large](/products/fantana-soho-large-76cm) and [Knightsbridge 81 cm](/products/fantana-knightsbridge-81cm), useful when you want a more flexible exterior.

Hard shells protect structured packing. Soft shells can flex around awkward shapes. Choose based on what you pack most often.

Features worth comparing

Once size and shell feel right, compare the details printed on each product page:

  • Wheels: most Fantana hard cases list 360° spinner wheels. Clerkenwell cabin, for example, notes four double spinner wheels and a 44 L capacity at 56 × 21 × 39.5 cm.
  • Handles: telescopic aluminium or multi-stage pull handles appear across Richmond, Chelsea, Marylebone, and Hampstead.
  • Expansion: several cabin and medium cases, including Kensington and Chelsea, list expandable depth so you can add room on the return journey.
  • Front access: Chelsea cabin lists a convenient front pocket for documents and small electronics without opening the main shell.
  • Ultra-compact cabin: [Bloomsbury Cabin 40cm](/products/eagle-bloomsbury-cabin-40cm) measures 40 × 30 × 20 cm in durable ABS with detachable twin wheels. Still check your airline’s current allowance before treating any case as guaranteed under-seat or cabin-ready.

When a set makes sense

Luggage sets keep cabin, medium, and large in one family. Examples from our catalogue include Chelsea Set of 3, Marylebone Set of 3, Hampstead Set of 3, Islington Set of 3, Soho Set of 3, and Kensington Set of 4. Sets suit households that travel together or want the same look across trip lengths. If you only need one trip size for now, buy the single case and add matching pieces later from the same family.
